One man and his cats are on a mission to visit every RNLI lifeboathouse in the country.
It was Scarborough’s turn on Saturday, when Mark Newton drove his modified mobility scooter and feline companions to see the lifeboat.
Mark, from Swansea, was met at the lifeboat station by about 75 members of the Royal British Legion Riders Branch, who were in town for their annual get-together.
Mark’s circumnavigation of the country began on 7 April last year at Loch Gilphead in Scotland, where he hopes to finish it on 24 August.
By the new year, he had visited most of the lifeboathouses in Scotland, including those on the islands.
He arrived in Scarborough on Thursday afternoon and intends to drive to Bridlington, via Filey and Flamborough, on Wednesday.
So far, he has been pledged £16,500 to be shared between the RNLI, SSAFA, Help for Heroes, the British Legion and the Queen’s Dragoon Guards Benevolent Fund.
He and his cats, Missy and Smudge, sleep in a small trailer.
John Senior, lifeboat operations manager at Scarborough, said: “We were delighted to be able to welcome Mark, his cat and unique Mobiscooter-caracomobo and we all thank him for his unique fundraising efforts on behalf of the RNLI and his other chosen charities.
“The Scarborough lifeboat crew wish Mark and his feline friends Missy and Smudge god speed and safe journey as they continue on their around-Britain challenge".
