Handing over
Planned Obsolescence.
Mary and I founded Wells for Zoe in 2005, as a tiny personal effort to bring clean water to maybe a few hundred people, because that was as far as we could see.
Of course we never counted on how the universe might collude to help us out.
DIT students have been volunteering in Malawi with Wells for Zoe since 2008.
This is the sixth Easter Volunteer group.
They are amazing in that they have an in-house interview system, from previous volunteers to select the next group. They all pay their own way, working many jobs to accumulate the cash for flights, travel accommodation food and some extra for a group-project while they are there.
Students get a bad press, but the students couldn’t have been better. They are the real deal, the A-Team, and I have no doubt at all that this group will be better than ever.
Now comes the real story.
For the first time Mary and Myself will miss this Easter trip as we have a family wedding, so Liam and Elaine: Back row, second and fourth from right, will take our place and represent, ourselves and the Board of W4Z, on the trip.
Both are members of our board and while Liam has had three previous volunteering trips to Malawi and a 4 month course placement from college, Elaine has had 6 previous trips and also a placement. They certainly have earned their stripes.
It is wonderful that in a few short years we have come to the stage that we have a W4Z board in Malawi and two very able kids to take our place, where nothing is lost of our mission or vision.
Its a real sign of success to be able to hand over with absolute confidence.
BUT we’re not dead yet and WE WILL BE BACK!!
We head out on Feb 23 and will miss the fun
