The war came to Oban...

This is the statue on the top of the Oban war memorial, out along the front past the parish church and the catholic cathedral. It is an unusual image, a wounded highlander being carried by two of his colleagues. It is one of the least warlike memorials that I've ever seen. This is maybe because of the massive numbers of names on the four sides of the monument. Loads of them, regiment by regiment. As usual, there are fewer names for the Second World War. There is also one name from the Falklands war, a 20 year old marine. The tears and the pain are palpable as you stand by the names, on a dreich January morning...
