Fire and Water, Underwood Lockhouse

Underwood Lockhouse, between Cumbernauld and Bonnybridge, was originally stables for horses on the Forth & Clyde Canal. Situated beside Lock 17 of the canal it also served as a place where people could have a meal, a drink or lodgings during their journey. All that ended, of course, when the canal fell into disuse.

Following the re-opening of the Forth & Clyde Canal to leisure traffic it was redeveloped as a restaurant, latterly serving primarily Indian meals, bar and cafe. However, having been open for several years, a major fire in July 2013 gutted the building, which still lies in ruins today.

This photo shows the juxtaposition of the now-redundant fire-damaged building with the water that still flows through Lock 17 of the canal.
