Albert Square, Manchester...
On a cold, grey January day I thought I'd raid the archives and post one from last summer or even summer 2012. It's of Albert Square in Manchester on a hot sunny day. I like the contrast between the old and the new in this picture, so typical of Manchester these days. The Victoria Fountain is in the foreground. It was erected here in 1899 to mark Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee. It was taken down and dumped in Heaton Park for many years but is now back where it belongs and looks wonderful. Behind it is the Albert Memorial which predates the one in London. I read that it was once threatened with demolition as well. Through the trees you can make out some of the Victorian buildings surrounding the square. And through the gap you can see the Hilton and Great Northern Towers making a nice contrast with but not overwhelming the square. The Hilton Tower is the tallest building in the city and the tallest building outside London...
