To hell and back

I spent the morning in an exam board discussing these.

Afterwards, I wandered round the modern art gallery, recovering. One of my favourite objects in the current exhibition is a handkerchief embroidered with the words:

"I have been to hell and back.
And let me tell you, it was wonderful."
