Shadow of the Sun

This sundial sits near to Inverleith House at the botanical garden in Edinburgh. It is one of a number of sundials designed by Ian Hamilton Finlay (Scottish poet and artist) and contains the words ‘The shadow of the sun and not of the bronze’ – emphasising the sun as the source of the shadow rather than the gnomon (bronze pointer). Today however, there was no shadow to be seen, the sun staying hidden behind the clouds. May be tomorrow will be an improvement - these grey days are a strain!
