Grandfather's job is to shell the chickpeas today
Stayed close to home today - tried to get to grips with some drawing and working with an artist. This old man was watching his grandchildren playing cricket in the courtyard and keeping a benevolent eye on them. He didn't mind me taking a photo or two of him as long as I gave him some money for buying tobacco. When I did he gave me a handful of chickpeas which I felt terrible about taking as they take so long to pod. There has been more synchronized wailing today as countryside family and friends came to mourn. It really tears the heart strings to hear them as the wife sobs and screams almost continually too. She has two grown up sons who will look after her and in her caste it is not unknown for a widow to marry again. Someone said that the husband used to beat her up when he was drunk and always kept her short of money - but she is certainly making a show of mourning as is the custom
