The Old Well. Scotlandwell.
This well was one of several in Kinross-shire that was referred to in ancient documents as Fontes Scotiae. As far back as 84AD, Roman armies marching between camps in Fife and Perthshire rested here and took the waters.
A hospital was established in 1250 and it became a popular place for pilgrims to visit. Robert the Bruce took the waters in an attempt to cure his leprosy.
In 1858 a canopy was built over the well. Unfortunately that makes it difficult to photograph the actual well so I've settled for capturing the run off complete with chained up cup for drinking from.
