Spur winged plover
Back up to Whangaparaoa today and there were lots of these guys on the reserve in front of the house.
A self introduced species from Australia to Southland, they are now widespread and quite common all over new Zealand.
I believe in Australia they are known as the masked lapwing, a much more accurate title (not a plover at all) - for comparison here is the red wattled lapwing from Asia that I photographed a few years ago.
