Under the railway line...

... a less than inviting pedestrian subway.

The Harrogate district of Starbeck became prominent as a railway centre in the nineteenth century. It had a busy railway station before Harrogate actually had a station.

The problem of the railway lines crossing a busy roadway was 'solved' by a level crossing. Early arguments about building a bridge over the line were lost to fears that horses, drawing carriages over the bridge, might be spooked by the noisy engines. So we a lumbered by a level crossing system which seriously disrupts road traffic. We also have this underpass for pedestrians as an alternative to walking across the railway lines when the gates are open.
