The Haunted Brig, (or Tam O'Shanter's Brig).

In Burn’s famous poem ‘Tam O’Shanter’, Tam, fleeing from a band of screaming witches, urges his trusty mare Meg onwards thus –

Now, do thy speedy utmost, Meg,
And win the key-stane o' the brig;
There at them thou thy tail may toss,
A running stream they dare na cross.

Tam well knows that witches cannot cross running water, so once his mare has reached the keystone of the bridge both he and Meg are safe. Thus he spurs his steed onwards with all haste and although the two escape, poor Meg does lose her lovely tail to one of the witches!
This little bridge always makes me think of the bridge that features in the poem, but really it is just the little railway bridge in our local village. I specially saved taking this shot until today so that it could be my tribute to Robbie Burns on Burn’s Night. Hopefully it looks suitably eerie and haunted!
