Who's got the button?
I'm not much for jewelry, except for the "jewels" fashioned by Susan Baker. She has an amazing collection of antique buttons, a few of which go back to the 1750's. Susan knows the history of all the different buttons that comprise her one-of-a-kind creations. She also has the ability to put together a group of unmatched buttons into a bracelet or watch and make it look as though they belong together. I always search for her booth at the fiber related shows I attend. I also enjoy introducing others to the treasures in her booth.
I own a number of them (can't reveal exactly how many), and still found one I couldn't live without. I have perfume buttons, vegetable ivory buttons, crystal with gold overlay, carnival glass, Victorian glass, brass anchors, and designs under glass. I even enjoy giving them as gifts.
Susan told me she started looking for buttons as a seamstress, wanting something unique that wasn't available. Her first foray was a flea market in Texas, where she lives. Once she rummaged through a box of buttons, she was hooked. At the beginning, her husband would take the jewelry to work to sell. He joked that he had more money in his brief case from jewelry than he made from his job as an executive. She has been doing this for 27 years now. I hope she continues for many more.
