Cowgate Subway
Living in one of the most deprived areas of Newcastle (and within the top ten in England according to some) brings a kind of paranoia that wouldn't look out of place in an asylum. A Skid Row which encompasses a square mile or two, yet to those that actually live here, a parallel that is not deserved. Granted a stone's throw away from where I live is a couple of streets that have housed murderers, rapists, drug dealers and petty crooks - yet the majority of the area isn't too bad.
High unemployment, lack of facilities for kids, housing stock that to be honest could do with money invested and several generations of kids without any form of imagination all add up to paint a bleak picture. But hope is not all lost... the local council is investing a tidy sum of money into providing areas and facilities for the local people. I have seen the plans, and although I disagree on some the recognition that they are wanting to improve the area is there.
Shame that it will be wasted on many, yet cure none of the problems...
This is a blip of an entrance to the Cowgate Subway, over £20,000 invested into keeping it clean the past few months yet it is still something that anything living and in their right minds would avoid like the plague.
