IMPACT Philippines: Boat building
More than two months have passed since Typhoon Haiyan struck the Philippines: the strongest recorded storm ever to make landfall.
The coastal villages of Northern Cebu were badly hit. So many small fishing boats were destroyed. ‘They either disappeared in the storm surge or, as fishermen describe it, the boats were lifted many meters high and slammed into the coral rock outcropping and blasted into smithereens.’ describes Dr Perfecto (Director of IMPACT Philippines).
Without a means of earning a living, it would be inconceivable for small-scale fishermen to save enough money to replace their vessels and nets, so IMPACT Philippines is helping them to start over again.
So far 50 boats have been constructed, to replace those destroyed in the storms, providing families with the means of feeding themselves, earning a living and contributing to the local economy.
