Stained Glass at Craigie Hall
Today I was invited round to view Craigie Hall in Dumbreck. This A listed house was sold at auction last year. Unfortunately the house is in a very poor condition and needs a lot of work to bring it back to life. Permission has been lodged with Glasgow City Council to bring the building back into use as a residential property by the new owners of the site.
Craigie Hall was designed by John Honeyman and built in 1873 for Sir Thomas Mason at the height of Victorian prosperity and grandeur in Glasgow.
In 1897, Honeyman & Keppie were asked to add a billiards room, conservatory and ante drawing room. Much of the work was delegated to a 21 year old assistant, Charles Rennie Mackintosh. He is thought to have designed the hall over-doors, library, music room, over mantels and organ case. The organ case indents show early art nouveau and may be the first example of Mackintosh being given a free hand in designing fitted furniture.
