12 years a slave

I went to see the movie 12 years a slave with my girlfriend couple of days ago and i have to say it was an amazing story and a sad story of how we have treated people in the past. The movie is based on a true story an a book by Solomon Northup, a free black man in the 19th century America, who was tricked, kidnapped and sold to be a slave with false identity. After watching the movie i really want to read the book, to get the written version of a man who went through these hard times. I cant even imagine the feeling of going from being free and human to being nothing more than someones possession..
When will we learn that all people are equal and should be treated that way, if we would just open our eyes look at the history of mankind and could learn from our mistakes... well maybe someday?
