Disaster photo..

Yes, everything went wrong with this shot. Firstly we had just had a nice meal in the restaurant on the left, came out to find it was raining. I quickly got the camera out of the bag and tried, shielding it from the worst of the rain, to turn it on, using the push button on the side of the collapsable 10-30 kit lens and twisting to extend it... only somehow I must have pushed the lens release button....

BANG down went the lens on the ground landing smash and then rolling at least 5 metres through a couple of wet patches before I could catch up to it.

ARGH!! camera now open to the elements, I managed to retrieve the lens and stuck it straight back on and then took this shot... in movie mode (so it's a jpeg rather than my usual RAW). Then thought better of it as the camera was still getting wet from the rain so I quickly turned it off and shoved it back in the bag.

On inspection back home I was amazed to find virtually no marks on the side of the 10-30 kit lens, just a slight scuff but then I noticed that the full force of the drop had impacted on the metal lens mount - thankfully because the lens is so lightweight it hadn't done too much damage and the mount was intact and so were the contacts and both ends of glass, though on extending the zoom I could see that the sides of the lens barrel were wet. It still seems to work though but I'm quite impressed that the little kit lens stood up so well to the drop, the roll and the wet. I'm very glad nikon put a metal lens mount on it that's for sure. I just hope it didn't damage the VR or any other internals...!
