Franz Josef glacier

We walked from the village to within about 500 metres of the base of the glacier, the nearest point that is allowed. It is very spectacular although interrupted by the helicopter noise which is more or less continuous. Having a rest back in our motel room we were disturbed by a huge bang. A piece of ice about the size of a football had crashed through the roof of the room opposite to ours! Apparently some of the helicopters land on the glacier and collect ice on the runners which then drops off!
