The Pit
Best viewed *larger*
The pit at Ash moor, built literally, or let's say, dug out over night to fill with 900,000 cow carcasses from the foot & mouth epidemic here in Devon in 2001. They were on the verge of digging out 16 small pits to fill. But they didn't need them after all. As foot & mouth was killed off along with millions of animals. The government made a decision to restore it to farmland in 2003, but luckily the Devon Wildlife Trust were able to buy it & it's now been restored to a beautiful culm grassland & is covered in life from Spring onwards... the new trees planted marks the spot where the three burial pits they dug out where situated. What an ironic end to what was once going to be such a tragic out of bounds place! It was going to be filled with death, now it's been filled with life! xxx
