We went off to try to buy a goat for Christmas today, a task that requires careful judement. Leave it too near to the 25th, and goat prices rocket. Buy too soon, and you run the risk of your goat being stolen while it grazes in the vicinity of your house. I naively suggested putting a deposit on one, and picking it up nearer the time. Apparently not - anyone showing up with the ready cash would carry off our goat, deposit not refundable.

In the event, the acquisition was unresolved. No goat quite met the exacting standards, we would return another day. I did wonder how Elsie and Hannah would cope with a goat who was grazing round the house one day, and gracing the Christmas table the next, but they informed me that it would be OK, as this was the goat's destiny, so he would be happy to have fulfilled it. They said they would name him Christmas, surname Dinner.
