Rainwater Harvesting in Karura School, Embu, Kenya
A Rain Water Harvesting System has been successfully installed at Karura Primary School in Embu District, Kenya.
The basic principal of rainwater collection systems is to capture and store water during wet seasons for use in drier months. It involves channelling waterfall on roofs through a system of pipes and guttering for storage in large 24,000 litre capacity tanks.
This is had a transformative effect on the school’s 500 pupils. IMPACT’s School Health Monitoring scheme is active in the school, and the surrounding community has been able to embark on tree planting to reduce soil erosion and a kitchen garden has been established in the school grounds. IMPACT East Africa has begun distributing seeds and saplings to people living in the nearby area, so that families can grow their own produce too. Children are able to take water home with them to support these efforts.
