Hyena Feeding in Harar
I arrived in Harar today, in the east of Ethiopia. My eyes were on sticks on the bus from Dire Dawa to the centre. Little villages and mud and stick huts.
Harar is a UNESCO city and is apparently the fourth holiest city for Muslims. In 3km square, there are 82 mosques, most of which are tiny houses. I'm staying inside the old city in a typical Harari house with rooms surrounding a central courtyard. In their living room, big colourful plates and basket weavings adorn the walls in a very traditional style.
The city is tiny and is a maze of narrow and colourful little streets. I didn't get any good photos of the streets and forgot to take inside the Harari house, so the hyena feeding will have to do.
The hyena feeding was first put in to practise 50 years ago by a farmer who wanted to stop them killing his livestock. Incredibly they seem almost tame. The feeders letting the hyenas climb on them, grabbing the raw meat out of their mouths.
I stayed well behind the bajaj thank you very much!
