Great Spotted Woodpecker (Dendrocopos major)

First one I've seen come by the garden this Winter. A red patch on the back of the head identifies this one as a male, though it's barely visible in this shot. Cropped the photo a fair bit - down from ten to the equivalent of about a five mega-pixel shot.

Put this telephoto lens on the camera just a few minutes before he appeared... or, more realistically, considering the size difference, I put the camera on the lens! Took about a dozen hand-held shots through the window glass, and was surprised that about 75% of them came out very well. For the 'fails', focus was off in one, and slight camera shake in the others. The latter is hardly surprising, as a 300mm lens on this camera is equivalent to a 810mm lens on a 35mm camera!  Tripod wasn't to hand, and he didn't stay long.

There was also a cock Pheasant mooching about earlier on.

(Note: it's not a big garden!)
