Fresco
Today's walk required quite a drive to the Spanish border at le Perthus. The scenery was very attractive at the end of the Pyrenean chain but the walk was especially interesting from the historical point of view. We visited a pre Romanesque church at les Cluses. The fresco is 12th century. We walked on to the Vauban fort Bellegarde built after the 17th century treaty of the Pyrenees but never needed. Close by are the Roman roads the Via Domitia and the Via Augusta. There were plenty of Roman remains and fortifications the length of the valley. At the border the ruts worn in the stone by carts could clearly be seen.
