Peranakan Slippers

These colourful, beaded, Nonya (lady) slippers date back to the early twentieth century and are usually worn for weddings and other happy occasions. The main patterns are flowers and fish, you can see the black beads used for the eyes of the fish on a couple of the slippers.

The Peranakans are descendants of 17th century Chinese traders who migrated to the Malay Archipelago. A rich hybrid of Chinese and Malaysian traditions with a touch of Dutch and Indonesian influences.
The East Coast area of Singapore has many examples of the Peranakan culture and well worth a visit.
