Pigsqueak
The thick, shiny leaves of Bergenia cordofolia, a plant with the distinctly unsavory common name of ‘Pigsqueak,’ are especially stunning in winter. Easy to grow in moist, humus-rich soil, it spreads politely and has pretty pink or white (depending on the cultivar) bell-like flowers in the spring. Right now, though, the leaves are turning red, purple, and bronze before the new growth starts to appear…very pleasing for the winter garden.
