Not every day

Morning has broken

Sabich is one of the finest of late breakfasts. The combination of egg, eggplant and tahina with a bread and salad gives everything one needs - taste, freshness, comfort and nourishment. Brought to Israel by Iraqi Jews, it has become a national institution alongside shakshuka. The name may come from the Arabic صباح , which means "morning". Traditionally eaten on shabbat, as here. This may, or may not, be the first time it has been eaten with crumpet loaf (recently invented by Greenhalgh's bakery in Preston).

The author of the song referenced in the title travelled in a different direction, religiously. Although his father was Greek Orthodox and his mother a Swedish Baptist, Steven Georgiou went to a Roman Catholic primary school in London. Later he adopted the stage name Cat Stevens, but for many years now he has been Yusuf Islam.
