Five bridges

This was the view this morning on the way to work. The train stopped unexpectedly on the bridge.

Looking downstream you can see give of the seven bridges across the Tyne...

The blue one is the Queen Elizabeth 2 Bridge which carries the metro.

Next is the High Level Bridge carrying the railway on top and road underneath. This was opened in 1849, designed by Robert Stephenson.

Next, and mostly hidden from view is William Armstrong's swing bridge. The original mechanics are still in use.

The famous Tyne Bridge is next, with it's imposing green arch. This was built in 1928 based on the design of the Hell Gate Bridge in New York City.

And finally the Gateshead Millennium Bridge with its slender white arch. The bridge opens like a blinking eyelid!
