A lot of money

This is one of the first companies I visited as a graduate programmer in 1987. I well remember it thought the name and use has changed.

It was a small light engineering company that was like going back in time. The office was dark; poorly lit and the staff sat at big high desks. It was like something out of a Dickens novel.

We never bothered much about data protection in those days and the first thing we always did when visiting a new company was to check the salary of the person or people we were dealing with. This was unethical but all the young programmers did this and shared the information with each other.

The person who owned this place was taking a salary of £54,000 in 1987. I nearly died when I saw it :) Still a lot of money 26 yrs later.
