Lan Su Garden
Garden of the Awakening Orchid, though any orchid worth its salt was hibernating far from this bitter cold. The 'lake' called Lake Zither had a skim of ice and the volunteers were rather more numerous than the patrons at the garden today. The teashop that is contained within its walls was doing a comparatively booming business as any shady spot would freeze you in moments and if you rounded a corner and the wind found you you were chilled again despite the bright sun. This garden was a gift from Portland's sister city of Suzhou. They gifted the stones, which are prized, the plants (many were wrapped against the elements to protect them from freezing and limiting the photos options somewhat), most of the buildings are made from supplies that were gifted. It is considered the most authentic Chinese garden outside of China. The pink you see on this stone is large camellia blossoms that are 5 or 6 inches across. Where they found them is a mystery as the local buds are clamped tight as...a miser's wallet. (Whew, had to think there for a simile that was suitable and g-rated). I will try to return in warmer weather to share a more frost free image of this lovely space. Look here for a link
