The Day the Transformer was Installed
It was a day of activity in our street. Late night they attempted to remove all the parked cars (a challenge) for the arrival of a electrical transformer that was to be installed for the light rail project. The transformer arrived on the back of this amazingly sophisticated low loader semitrailer which set up residence in the middle of the street.
The plane was that a 300 Tonne crane was to come early in the morning and locate the transformer building onto a previously prepared site. The first problem was that the crane broke down on the expressway. :(.
Around lunch time the crane arrived and prepared for the lift. This involved loading two b-doubles plus a semitrailer load of counter weight onto the cranes. All quite fascinating for someone who likes to be entertained with this kind of stuff.
Next delay was that they needed someone from Optus to hold a low slung cable up high enough for the transformer to pass under it. A couple of hours lost waiting for the expert to arrive but only if they had have let me know I'm sure I could have solved their problem. (Bureaucracy!)
The show finally got under way around 4:30 pm and success was achieve. And we all lived happily ever after!
Rumor has it that this additional transformer cost around $5 million. Its purpose is to ensure complete reliability of the system but there are already two other transformers further down the line. I only wish this money had of been spent on installing a cycle path along the route.
