A very exciting day!
Our day started off being very un-interesting, buying some postcards and having lunch together on pub street. However, on the way back, we decided to stop off at the 'Khmer help Khmer English school' which they started to build back in the 1990's, but had to stop due to running out of funding. Nothing is finished, and what little classrooms there are do not have walls. Subsequently, the number of students there has dropped dramatically. When we arrived, we spoke to the owner on the phone and he immediately came down to the school to meet with us. Telling not only the history of the school, but also of his personal life. We even managed to speak about his beliefs on Christianity! Once he had finished showing us around the school, he took us to his brother and mums home, and then later to his brother in law's parents family's house! The Khmer people really are the most friendly and welcoming people in the world. We shared fruit, and listened as he spoke to us about all his future ambitions for the school. Later, we sat in on an English class, consisting of only 3 boys. We helped them with their punctuation and grammar, and are going back every evening Monday to Fridays to help out. After the class, they are going to give us basic lessons in Khmer!! The family have offered up their home and school, saying that if we decide to stay, or come back at a later date, I can volunteer as a teacher and Joel can help out with the building work and actually finishing the school! They will even give us rooms in the main house for a reasonable price. It really is an incredible opportunity. We both feel so blessed and want to do all we can to help. The school is in desperate need of so much...
