Do Fences Make Good Neighbors?

This is a short length of fence next to our driveway which runs past the neighbor's deck and back yard. When Sumner was about 8 she and her friend made a little fort out of it because there was a tree beside it with vines growing over the tree creating a nice little hidden spot. They made it a "Perfume Factory" and painted in lovely colors on our side of the fence. They used to go to a nearby creek and gather water and plant materials and put them in pretty jars and vases we picked up at second-hand shops. They even made business cards for their little venture. They called it Potion Palace. This painting on the fence and playing in this spot did not make the neighbors happy. So they were forced to relocate - not a problem, inventory was small. The fence is old and will be replaced and the painting is faded, but this memory of two little girls being entrepreneurs will remain.

“And I learned what is obvious to a child. That life is simply a collection of little lives, each lived one day at a time. That each day should be spent finding beauty in flowers and poetry and talking to animals. That a day spent with dreaming and sunsets and refreshing breezes cannot be bettered. But most of all, I learned that life is about sitting on benches next to ancient creeks with my hand on her knee and sometimes, on good days, for falling in love.”
