Gatehouse in depth
Todays effort is the gatehouse at Caerphilly castle, trying to show the depth of the entrance into this wonderful castle. Would have been east just showing the entry to a castle, but there is so much more than just a gate.
The inner east gatehouse is perhaps the most impressive part of the castle. Until as recently as the 1930s, only the rear wall of the medieval building was left standing. The marquess of Bute had the shell of the gatehouse restored, but some parts, including the floors of the first- and second-floor rooms, were left unfinished.
Cadw is bringing this building back to life so visitors can experience the great rooms it contains and the magnificent views from the rooftop. This involved conserving the stonework, adding new gutters to stop the rain pouring back into the building, laying new wooden floors, making the staircases safe, and fitting new doors and windows.
