All Smiles on board the Jibon Tari, Bangladesh

There are more than 700 rivers in Bangladesh, so a hospital boat is an ideal way to reach impoverished communities.

The Jibon Tari (Boat of Life) floating hospital is a fully-equipped modern hospital on a boat. It travels to riverside villages where it stays for several months to provide medical care to the local community.

Since its launch in 1999, nearly 500,000 people have benefited from medical treatment (including surgery) on board, and a further 400,000 plus have benefited from health education through the community outreach programme.

Most of the people who come to the Jibon Tari for treatment have no alternative access to medical care and so many of them leave with their sight, hearing or mobility restored, or cleft lip repaired.

You might remember last summer The Jibon Tari was featured on Al Jazeera’s excellent world health programme ‘The Cure’ – why not take another look at the feature using the link below?
