Glenbuchat Castle

Built in 1590 by John Gordon to celebrate his marriage to second wife Helen Carnegie, Glenbuchat is a typical Z-plan tower house set in Strathdon. A later John Gordon sold the castle and estate in 1738. He was a staunch Jacobite, even refusing a royal pardon for his part in the uprising. Apocryphal tales tell of how King George II was terrified of him.
Following sale, the castle fell into disrepair and ruin. By the Victorian era it was roofless. In 1946 the then owner gifted the building to the state. Now it is cared for by Historic Scotland. When we visited today it was closed to visitors internally due to unsafe masonry.
