Straddling Oxford Road from the city centre to the curry restaurants of Rusholme, Manchester University is one of the largest campuses in Europe. It is one of the city's most important institutions and is now ranked among the best universities on the planet. Much of it is modern and they are about to build yet more modern facilities. But at the core of the university are the old Victorian buildings built around courtyards that wouldn't look amiss in a college at Oxford or Cambridge. Look carefully at the bottom of the ivy clad wall and you will see a huge stone. It is called an erratic and was found when the Victorian buildings were built. It is actually a boulder from the Lake District and was brought here by the ice sheets in the last ice age...
