Wind! Wind! Rain! and more Wind! I escaped the rain and high winds for a little while, took a drive east, and found this little park with a huge tree in the middle. It still had dried up leaves on it, as well as the trees surrounding. It was just nice to get out of the cold wind for a while.
Earlier today, I was looking a couple of blip journals. Both are preparing for an upcoming photographic trip to Yosemite National Park in California. One was talking about seeing the "firefall", a time the occurs only in February where the sun is reflected off a the waterfall at Horsetail Falls.
I remember a time when the Yosemite Firefall was something far different. I grew up in Southern California. During the summers, my parents would take us for camping trips into Yosemite Valley. In the evening, we witnessed an amazing spectacle, the historic Yosemite Firefall from Glacier Point. In the late afternoon, the Park Service would kindle embers in a receptacle, then at twilight would dump this receptacle over Glacier Point, creating a fall of glowing embers that could be seen in many parts of the Valley. It was truly an amazing site, and the highlight of every evening. The firefall was discontinued in 1968, to the dismay of many regular visitors. If you are interested, HERE is a nice photo and remembrance.
For those who are going on this photographic trip put together by John Gravett, have a wonderful time, and please post wonderful images of the natural firefall. Have a wonderful time! We all look forward to seeing your photos!
