Save water!
Our German captain, Torsten Olbrich, is a man with a sense of humour and a commitment to saving the planet.
We had only been on board an hour a week ago when he was warning us of the world’s shortage of water.
“Once I travelled up the Amazon with 120 passengers.
We did not have enough water. I showed them how they could survive by using one glass of water to wash their hands and face and brush their teeth.
Save water that is my advice. Shower with a friend. If you do not have a friend yet, go to reception where we have started a list.”
Each evening he tells us a story from his life, how during his time as captain of the biggest oil tanker in the world he had fought off pirates, escaped typhoons and discovered a remote island off the west coast of Africa. Here lived a group of people whom the world had abandoned. The island had been used to dump nuclear waste, which had polluted the land making it impossible to grow anything, and the people had developed cancers.
They gave them what little help they could like fixing their generator and sharing some fuel with them.
During a Q &A session he was asked his favourite place in the whole world.
“The Antarctic…. followed by the Arctic” he said. “Because there are no people there and the world is unspoilt.”
(OMG! Traveling around the Caribbean with over 2,000 people must be his idea of hell. )
Cruise news.
Day at sea and that means getting up early – before 7 am – to bag a sun lounger.)
