I bet there are several sites in the net to be used for photography planning. I've recently used Gaisma which gives the sunrise and sunset times as well as the compass point where that will happen.

The picture above shows the situation today where I live. Orange line is today and you can see that the sun set 15:57. Blue line shows the shortest day Dec 21 when sun rises at 9:43 and sets at 14:40.
