Fog Bell - Old and New
The Maritime Operations Centre is the new and guides ships in and out of the harbour. The old here is the bell which was cast in 1889, in thick fog it warned ships of the entrance to the harbour. It was positioned at the seaward end of the North Breakwater. The harbourmaster operated the bell from a switch within the old Maritime Operations Centre. It was removed in 2001, and subsequently it was placed here next to the new Maritime Operations Centre.
It poured with rain this morning, I was not expecting to see any blue sky today, but in fact the weather started to change about lunch time, the sky was starting to clear while I was down at the harbour.
