Reach for the sky
These Royal palms are often called the politician palm because they grow to a greater height than any other palm in the Caribbean. They don’t bear any useful fruit and when they reach their full height their tops blows off in the wind.
After the heat, sun, sea and sand of yesterday we opted for the tranquillity of the Joseph Reynold O’Neal Botanic Gardens in Road Town, Tortola, part of the British Virgin Islands.
The gardens have links with the Edinburgh Botanical Gardens and what surprised me most was the similarity between these tropical gardens and some on the west coat of Scotland.

Last night comedian Berni Flint reminded us that he was for 12 weeks top of the show Opportunity Knocks, yet folk have forgotten him but remember the music Mr Muscle man used to ripple his muscles to and he was top for only one week.
“And I bet you all remember that tune,” said Berni.
Without prompting, the audience began humming it – after 35 years!
