Christchurch N Z 3 years on
Hi well big day. Picked up my niece from Australia then visited my sister at the hospital. Poor thing surgeon said it was the worst break of its kind he had dealt with. Long road back maybe six weeks rehabilitation in Burwood Hospital. So a long time for her away from home.
Then we set off on foot all around the earthquake zone which I had never been back near in the three years. Just so much to see. The Annual Floral Festival was taking place and this year it was back in the square. Always used to be a floral carpet in the Cathedral so instead much of the floral art was in front of the Cathedral Amazing animals like this elephant all with wire frames and plant material growing out of them. Many of these colourful bells everywhere obviously representing the Cathedral Bells.
Further up was the shopping area made out of shipping containers quite amazing. Up there were a lot of these wire frames in the shape of Kiwis they were awesome. However I felt this photo with the Cathedral most summed it all up. Decisions still being made as to whether it is restored or demolished.
Further round we visited The Cardboard Cathedral an awesome structure full of feeling that is designed to last I think they said for 15 years. We then went to the empty section where there is a white chair for everyone that was killed in the quake.
A very momentous day. Home now to get ready to go to Tekapo for the family wedding and good weather is forecast so all good.
