SHADE

I took myself off to the garden early this morning, placed a chair in the shade of the plum tree and set the large hose in position to irrigate the vegetable patch. It was great just sitting there listening to the sounds around me - the soft continuous burble of water running in the furrow; the gentle cooing of the doves; the insistent call of a nearby pigeon; staccato sounds of wood being chopped and a car door slamming....
My eye fell on these tomatoes and I marveled at the plant's ability to shade the fruit with its leaves. Unsympathetic staking of the plant had exposed the fruit to the sun. The plant made a plan...
