Stramongate bridge

I have said before that it's reasonably easy to get at least a half interesting photo in Kendal, just getting out and about and you'll find something.
This is Stramongate Bridge in the town that stands over the Kent, one a few that stand in the town centre. I also find taking a picture of something makes you look at it a bit more and one thing I'd never noticed is that this bridge on each leg (is that the correct term?) there's a kind of plinth. I wonder if anything ever stood on them?
