Ghost Plane

This is a military DC3 belonging to the US Navy that crash landed on a beach in Iceland in 1973.

Sólheimasandur, where the plane wreck is located, is a black, volcanic sand wasteland in the south coast of Iceland, near Vik. It has an eerie, other worldly feel to it (like much of Iceland) but the presence of this wreck on the black volcanic earth made me feel like I had stepped into an apocalyptic film.

It's not easy to get to - 2 hour drive from Reykjavik then a 2 mile walk from the road - but well worth it. You can even see it using Google Earth if you look carefully enough!
