The first church was built at this place, was a church from the 10th century. Then there are remains of a church from the 11th century, and a third was built in the 13th century. The present church was built around 1590. In the year 1580 captured Philip Count of Hohenlohe-Langenburg city for Dokkum William of Orange . This meant Dokkum that the occupation of the Spaniards was over. This also meant that the Reformed Worship could be introduced.

Headstones [ edit ]

Some graves in the church are probably placed during the renovation. We know this because there are accounts of the tombs are from the year 1591. Known Many tombstones are still in the church. For example you can see graves of Luitien Cornelis who died in the year 1636. There are also tombs of English and Scottish soldiers who have come together in the Netherlands with the Earl of Leicester. After the assassination of William of Orange , the Republic asked for help from England. This sent in 1584 Robert Dudley , 1st Earl of Leicester, along with 5,000 soldiers. His arrival was not a success. He was accused of fraud, and he was forced to leave. Netherlands in 1587
