Allegedly, the areas of broken mussel shells that are deep in a peaty layer that would have been above tide level in the mesolithic age are potentially middens or piles of waste. Other areas of unbroken shells further out were mussel beds from which food was collected taken up the beach, eaten and the shells discarded into piles. At least that's the gist of what this archaeologist was saying on a sunny Sunday on the beach.
