Noble Paul Wolff

A complete empty ocean, from horizon to horizon, and we met this drilling rig exactly on our intended track. It is the Semi Submersible rig 'Noble Paul Wolff' from the American company Noble Corporation. I showed you pictures of more or less all different kind of offshore structures, but I think we missed this one. In earlier days these rigs were moored with heavy anchors, but this one is operating at a water depth of 2250 meters. Anchors would be more or less useless, because the weight of the mooring would come close to her own breaking strength. Therefore the Noble Paul Wolff uses a different way of positioning herself; thrusters. It is a DP 2 class rig, holding her position with computer controlled thrusters. Drilling thousands of meters deep in the seafloor while completely relying on her propulsion. Can you imagine what damage would occur if something happened to that propulsion?
